Bon Ton Restaurant & Resort Langkawi
Pantai Cenang
Many of Bon Ton’s guests are people seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives. Why do people keep coming back Because Bon Ton allows guests to escape to the simplicity of kampung (village) life. Resort owner, Narelle McMurtrie, treats guests like part of the family, in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. And yet a sense of style pervades the whole experience.
Accommodation is in seven antique Malay timber houses. The houses are beautifully restored with modern amenities and individually decorated in a unique Aseana style. Set in tranquil gardens, with a pool and jacuzzi, the resort overlooks wetlands and mountain ranges. The staff’s commitment to an intimate, non-intrusive level of service, results in a seamless stay with antique furniture and modern homeware. The resort’s F and B outlets, Nam restaurant, and Buzz cafe stand alone too, by providing an eclectic mix of east meets west cuisine, an extensive wine list and Chin Chin, the island’s only funky lounge bar, housed in an old Chinese shop house.
It is not unusual to see a guest cooking up a storm in the resort’s kitchen, with chefs eagerly looking on. Guests have often been treated to a visit to one of the island’s many local markets to buy their ingredients and with produce in hand, happily returned “home†to roll up their sleeves in the kitchen. There have been a myriad of dishes prepared from all over the world with chefs learning how to make everything from moussaka to blue cheese ice cream.
And of course with food, comes good wine. Narelle happily opens up her wine cellar to guests (particularly when they have cooked!), and shares a fine bottle of white or red over a home cooked meal. Many stories have been exchanged over the “kitchen†table and cheeses and a glass of aged port or cognac often follow dinner. Having said that, given the rigours of running a resort and busy F and B outlets, Narelle always encourages guests to get behind the bar and mix their own cocktails too! One guest was quoted as saying "it's like sleeping in your favourite restaurant".
With every home comes a much loved pet, or in this case, pets. McMurtrie’s passion for the resort and all things Langkawi has extended to complimenting local efforts to deal with the island’s stray cat and dog population. Consequently, the resort’s lush garden, situated in three acres of un-spoilt coconut plantation, a haven to many a guest, has also become a sanctuary for abandoned cats and dogs. So, don’t be surprised if you end up with a visit from one of the friendly cats or walking one of the dogs during your stay.
Laying back in the pool or jacuzzi is a wonderful way to end each day and watch the dance of the light at sunset over the wetlands bordering the resort. This spectacular show is made even better with one of Bon Ton’s infamous daiquiris or margaritas in hand. Guests leave with a real sense of having stayed in a home away from home. And just like home, the welcome mat is always out ready to greet you upon your return.
